Pickling was a popular way to preserve fresh fruits and vegetables for later consumption.  Victorians used a number of dishes to serve their preserved food and relishes.
Relish, back then, depending on the ingredients, might have been called piccalilli, chow-chow, or chutney, but they all had the same job to do.  They were condiments served with food to enhance the flavor.  And especially in the days before refrigeration, enhancing the flavor was sometimes a big job.  But lets not talk about that.....
Far and away, most EAPG dishes to hold such flavor enhancers, as well as preserved fruits & veggies were oblong, shallow bowls averaging 3-4" wide and 6-8" long.  But Victorians were not above reaching into their imaginations and making relish dishes in odd shapes too.  We have some of those in our Novelties Store.
These dishes make very nice hostess, special day or bridal gifts because they can be used creatively as nut or candy dishes or as spoon rests by the coffee pot.  See example below.
